AI & Automation
AI Calling at Scale: What to Measure Before You Automate
AI voice agents promise five times the dials. Five times the dials isn't five times the money. Nexum gives you the control and measurement layer that tells the difference.
Automation multiplies whatever you point it at, including mistakes.
Summary
AI calling vendors sell attempt volume; agencies get paid on kept commitments.
Right-party contacts, commitments, escalations and dollars per conversation decide whether automation works.
Nexum enforces eligibility before every contact and CallGrade measures every recorded conversation.
Key takeaways
Define success metrics and a control group before any AI calling pilot.
Require that every automated call posts to the account and counts toward limits.
Put Nexum's controls and CallGrade around whatever dials.
The pitch, and the catch
AI voice agents are being sold with huge attempt multiples. But attempts never paid an agency. Payments come from right-party conversations that end in kept commitments. If an AI makes five times the attempts and converts the same, you bought a bigger phone bill and more legal exposure.
Measure the conversation, not the dial
Before any automated calling pilot, agree on the metrics that decide whether it worked:
- Right-party contacts per thousand attempts, compared with your human baseline on similar accounts.
- Commitments per right-party contact, and the share kept.
- Escalation rate: how often the AI hands off to a person, and why.
- Dollars collected per automated conversation, net of the AI and telecom cost.
- Complaint and dispute rates on accounts the AI touched.
Run the pilot against a comparison group of similar accounts worked the usual way. Without one, you're measuring the season, not the AI.
Controls come before volume
Automated calls carry the same obligations as human calls, and some extra ones. Before scaling:
- Consent and calling rules: confirm with counsel what consent the technology requires for each number type.
- Disclosures: the agent must identify itself and deliver required disclosures in the right place.
- Eligibility: cease-and-desist, bankruptcy, attorney representation, disputes, call-time windows and frequency limits must be checked before each call, from current data.
- Escalation: the consumer must be able to reach a person, and certain topics (disputes, hardship, legal questions) should route to one automatically.
- Recording and review: every automated conversation recorded and reviewable.
- Account updates: results posted to the account so the next contact is informed.
Quality assurance doesn't go away
An AI that says the wrong balance or mishandles a dispute will do it at scale. Score a sample of automated conversations against the same scorecard you use for collectors, with human sign-off. Watch for patterns, not just individual errors.
Questions to put to any AI calling vendor
- What were right-party contact and payment rates against a control group?
- How does the agent check eligibility before dialing, and from what data?
- What triggers a handoff to a human?
- Can we review every conversation and its transcript?
- What does each completed conversation cost, all in?
Where Nexum fits
Nexum is the control and measurement layer that makes any calling strategy safer and smarter:
- Eligibility enforced: contact is blocked for cease-and-desist, bankruptcy, do-not-call, call hours and attempt limits.
- Every contact logged in the Comm Log with its source, so automated activity is visible and counted.
- CallGrade scores recorded calls against your scorecard with evidence and human sign-off.
- SilentReach creates inbound callbacks with screened ringless voicemail, so collectors spend time on people who want to talk.
- PracticeFloor sharpens your human collectors with AI practice instead of replacing them.
The bottom line
Don't buy dials. Buy conversions, and put Nexum around whatever does the dialing. See automated calls need controls before volume.
