Why Aging Reports Need Context Before They Drive Priorities
A 90-day account isn't always worse than a 30-day one. Nexum prioritizes by behavior, contactability and value, not just age.
Age is a clue, not a verdict.
Summary
Aging buckets are one weak predictor of collectibility.
Placement age, debt type, contactability, prior effort, behavior and balance often matter more.
Nexum keeps aging for reporting and uses DebtorIndex and list filters for prioritization.
Key takeaways
Put placement age and contact history next to delinquency age.
Don't let oldest-first ordering set your daily lists.
See behavior-based lists in a Nexum demo.
What aging misses
- Placement age: a 300-day-old debt placed yesterday is fresh to your operation.
- Debt type: medical, utility, telecom and card debts age differently.
- Contactability: a 60-day account with no working number can be worse than a 180-day account that answered last week.
- Prior effort by other agencies.
- Behavior: partial payments, promises and responses.
- Balance: expected value depends on what's collectible.
What age misses
Placement age vs. delinquency age. An account that's 300 days delinquent but was placed with you yesterday is fresh to your operation; nobody has worked it with your methods yet.
Debt type. Medical, utility, telecom, credit card and student loan accounts age very differently.
Contactability. A 60-day account with no working phone number may be less collectible than a 180-day account where the consumer answered last week.
Prior effort. An old account that's been worked hard by two previous agencies is different from an old account nobody has touched.
Behavior. Partial payments, kept or broken promises and responses to outreach all say more about willingness than the calendar does.
Balance. Expected recovery value depends on how much is collectible, not just how likely.
Use age as context
A better approach puts aging next to the other signals:
- Delinquency age and placement age.
- Debt type and client.
- Contact history and current contactability.
- Payment behavior and promises.
- Prior agency effort, where known.
Then prioritize using all of it. Age becomes one input among several.
Check it in your own data
Pull recovery rates by age bucket within each client and debt type. You'll often find that the buckets don't rank the way people assume, and that contactability explains more than age.
Don't confuse reporting with prioritization
Clients like aging reports, and that's fine; keep producing them. Just don't let the reporting format set your collectors' daily lists.
How Nexum prioritizes instead
- Back Office Portfolio Overview shows age buckets alongside status and client for reporting.
- The Daily Call List Builder filters on days since last contact, status, balance, industry, state and DebtorIndex tier together.
- DebtorIndex scores from real behavior across channels and separates accounts that need better contact data from accounts ready to call.
The bottom line
Report by age. Collect by collectibility. Nexum lets you do both. See collector queues should optimize recoveries.
