Complex Portfolios Need Clear Treatment Paths

One-size-fits-all treatment fits almost nobody. Nexum moves every account down the path that fits it, automatically.

One-size-fits-all treatment fits almost nobody.

Summary

Mixed portfolios need different handling by value, reachability, status and history.

Defined treatment paths make handling consistent and measurable.

DebtorIndex work lists, list filters, screened campaigns and automatic status changes move accounts between paths.

Key takeaways

Define four to six treatment paths with entry and exit rules.

Let account events move accounts between paths.

Why one approach fails

Fresh and old accounts, small and large balances, good and dead numbers, disputes, plans and holds can't all be worked the same way without waste.

What a treatment path is

A treatment path is a defined way of handling a group of accounts: who works them, through which channels, how often, with what offers, and when they move to a different path. For example:

1. High value, reachable. Collector calls first, follow-up within 48 hours, plan or settlement options within client authority.

2. Moderate value, reachable. Digital-first sequence (email, voicemail, text with payment link), collector call on response.

3. Low value. Low-cost digital outreach only; periodic review.

4. Unreachable but promising. Contact-data repair before any more attempts.

5. Disputed. No collection outreach; dispute workflow until resolved.

6. Restricted. Holds for cease-and-desist, bankruptcy, attorney, deceased; no contact.

7. Legal review. Accounts meeting criteria for review, with controlled escalation. See legal escalation requires a controlled decision trail.

Entry and exit rules

Each path needs clear rules for which accounts enter and what moves them out:

  • A callback moves an account from digital-first to collector follow-up.
  • A dispute moves any account to the disputed path.
  • A payment plan moves it to plan monitoring.
  • A broken plan moves it back to active treatment.
  • New contact data moves an account out of repair.

Measure by path

For each path, track collections, cost per account and per dollar recovered, and movement between paths. Adjust the rules when a path underperforms.

How Nexum runs the paths

DebtorIndex sorts accounts into tiers and Call, Fix Contact Data, Bureau Pull, Holds and Legal lists. The Daily Call List Builder filters by tier, balance, status, industry and recency. SilentReach, Nudge and Campaigns run digital paths with automatic exclusions. Result codes and dispute filing move account status automatically, and restrictions are enforced across every channel.

The bottom line

Complex portfolios become manageable when treatment is deliberate. Nexum makes it automatic. See scores to recovery decisions.
