Price Your Collections Operation by Real Unit Economics

Two portfolios at the same rate can have wildly different margins. Nexum shows you which ones actually make money.

You can't price a portfolio well if you don't know what it costs to work.

Summary

Contingency revenue is easy to estimate; portfolio costs are easy to overlook.

Per-portfolio unit economics reveal margin, cost per recovered dollar and dollars per labor hour.

Nexum puts fee percentages, campaign costs, AI spend and CFO views in one place, with no seat fees eating margin.

Key takeaways

Calculate contribution margin per client monthly.

Price new placements from real unit costs.

Revenue is a percentage. Cost isn't.

Two portfolios at 25% can have very different margins if one needs twice the labor, data, outreach and reporting.

Build per-portfolio unit economics

For each client or portfolio, track:

Revenue

  • Net collections × contingency rate (or fee structure).

Direct costs

  • Collector labor (hours × loaded rate).
  • Outreach: texts, emails, voicemail drops, letters.
  • Data: skip trace and bureau pulls.
  • Payment processing fees not passed through.
  • AI usage: transcription, scoring, other services.
  • Commissions.

Servicing costs

  • Client reporting and account management.
  • Dispute handling and compliance work specific to the client.

Contribution margin = revenue − direct and servicing costs.

Then compute cost per recovered dollar and dollars collected per labor hour for each portfolio.

What this reveals

  • Clients that look large but barely break even.
  • Portfolios where low-cost outreach could replace expensive labor.
  • Accounts where data spending outweighs expected recovery.
  • Service requirements that should be priced in.

Use it when pricing

When a creditor offers a new placement, estimate its economics from similar portfolios: expected recovery curve, labor per account, outreach and data needs. Price to a target margin. If the rate is fixed, decide how to work the portfolio profitably, or whether to take it at all.

Use it to prioritize

Within a portfolio, unit economics tells you where effort pays: high expected-value accounts get collector time; others get low-cost digital outreach. See scores to recovery decisions.

How Nexum supports it

  • Client fee percentages drive agency fees and commissions automatically.
  • HeartBeat CFO perspective and Financial Pack focus on money, fees and margins.
  • Campaign cost shown live for SilentReach.
  • Token Monitor for AI spend by service and model.
  • No seat fees: adding collectors to a profitable portfolio doesn't add software rent.
