Promises to Pay Are Workflows, Not Revenue

A promise isn't cash. Nexum turns every commitment into a tracked workflow with follow-ups, so promises become payments.

A promise you don't follow up on is just an optimistic note.

Summary

Promises to pay are leading indicators, not revenue.

Each promise needs a precise record, a reminder, a check and a follow-up when it breaks.

Nexum sets follow-ups from the call, flags due dates and connects promises to real payment tools.

Key takeaways

Report promises and collections separately.

Follow up on broken promises fast.

Promises aren't money

A great week of promises and a weak month of collections: every agency has seen it. Counting promises as revenue inflates performance and hides problems.

Treat each promise as a workflow

A promise should create a small, tracked process:

  1. Record it precisely: amount, date, method and how the consumer will pay.
  2. Confirm it: repeat the terms back on the call, and send a confirmation where appropriate.
  3. Remind: a reminder before the date, through an eligible channel.
  4. Check: on the date, did the payment arrive?
  5. Follow up: if not, a task for the collector to reach out, promptly.
  6. Learn: record whether it was kept, partially kept or broken.

Without step 5, broken promises silently age.

Measure promises properly

Track separately:

  • Promise rate: promises per right-party contact.
  • Promise-kept rate: by count and by dollars.
  • Average days from promise to payment.
  • Broken-promise follow-up time.

A collector with many promises and a low kept rate may be pressuring consumers into commitments they can't meet, which hurts recovery and can create complaints. A collector with fewer, well-qualified promises and a high kept rate is often worth more.

Better commitments

Good commitments are realistic, specific and confirmed. Coaching should focus on:

  • Understanding what the consumer can actually pay.
  • Offering options within client rules.
  • Confirming date, amount and method clearly.
  • Setting up an easy way to pay (a secure link or authorization).

Connect promises to payment tools

The easiest promise to keep is one where payment is already set up. A signed authorization or a portal link sent during the call converts better than "I'll call back Friday."

How Nexum turns promises into payments

  • Result codes like Promise to Pay Secured update status automatically.
  • Follow-up dates set when logging the call drive the Follow-up Due flag, My Desk and the Dashboard.
  • ConsentPay and the debtor portal turn commitments into scheduled or immediate payments.
  • DebtorIndex learns from kept and broken promises.
  • CallGrade scores whether commitments were confirmed clearly.

The bottom line

Celebrate promises, bank payments. Nexum connects the two. See which KPIs matter most.
