Data Enrichment Only Pays When It Changes the Next Action

More data isn't better data. DebtorIndex tells you which accounts need skip tracing, and which would be money wasted.

More data isn't better data. Data that changes the next step is.

Summary

Data enrichment adds phones, addresses and emails at a cost.

It pays only when it changes the next action on an account worth working.

DebtorIndex flags Fix Contact Data accounts and recommends Pull or Skip on bureau data.

Key takeaways

Enrich only where new data changes the next step.

Track right-party contact rates by data source.

Let DebtorIndex target your enrichment spend.

Enrichment is an investment

Every skip trace and lookup costs money. Agencies that enrich everything pay for a lot of data that never changes an outcome.

When enrichment pays

  • Promising accounts with bad contact data: the account looks collectible, but there have been many attempts with no conversation and the number is thin or wrong.
  • Returned mail: the address is known to be bad.
  • Accounts approaching a decision: where better information would move the account from "skip" to "work."

When it usually doesn't

  • Accounts with working contact data and recent conversations.
  • Accounts on hold (cease-and-desist, bankruptcy, attorney, deceased, dispute) that won't be contacted.
  • Very low-value accounts where expected recovery is less than the cost.

Quality matters as much as quantity

Enriched data can be wrong. A "new" phone number might belong to someone else entirely, and calling it can mean disclosing a debt to a third party. Treat enriched data as unverified until confirmed:

  • Verify identity before discussing the debt.
  • Record the source of each new number.
  • Mark wrong numbers promptly so they aren't reused.
  • Track right-party contact rates by data source and drop sources that perform poorly.

Same rules for new data

New phone numbers and emails must pass the same eligibility checks as any other: consent where required, number type for texting, time-zone rules for the new location, and frequency limits.

Measure it

  • Cost of enrichment per account and per recovered dollar.
  • Right-party contacts from enriched data.
  • Wrong-number rate by source.
  • Recovery on enriched vs. non-enriched comparable accounts.

How Nexum targets enrichment

DebtorIndex builds a Fix contact data list (many attempts, no conversation, a bad or thin number) and recommends skip trace before more calls. Admins also get a Bureau pull list with a Pull or Skip recommendation for uncertain accounts. Updated contact data on the debtor benefits every related account, and campaigns automatically screen invalid, landline and duplicate numbers.

The bottom line

Spend on data that changes decisions. DebtorIndex tells you where. See bureau data for every account?
