Should an Agency Buy Credit Bureau Data for Every Account?
No. Blanket data buying burns money. DebtorIndex tells you exactly which accounts are worth a pull.
Buy information when it can change a decision, not because the account exists.
Summary
Buying bureau or skip-trace data on every account pays for information that won't change most decisions.
Data is worth buying only where it's likely to change what you do and the account is worth enough.
DebtorIndex builds a Bureau Pull list with a Pull or Skip recommendation, most-uncertain first.
Key takeaways
Stop buying data on clearly strong, blocked or tiny accounts.
Target the uncertain middle.
Let DebtorIndex make the pull-or-skip call.
The short answer
No. Buying bureau data on every account is one of the fastest ways to overspend in collections. Data is only worth buying when it's likely to change your next action and the account is worth enough for that to matter.
Why blanket purchasing wastes money
Think about where accounts fall:
- Clearly strong accounts: good contact data and a payment history. Extra data rarely changes the plan.
- Clearly blocked accounts: cease-and-desist, bankruptcy, attorney representation, deceased. You won't contact them anyway.
- Very low-value accounts: the expected recovery may be smaller than the data cost.
- The uncertain middle: this is where new information can flip a decision from "skip" to "work," or reveal a working number.
Buying for every account means paying for the first three groups to help the fourth.
A simple decision rule
Estimate the expected recovery value of the account with and without the data. If the difference, multiplied by the chance the data changes your action, exceeds the cost of the pull, buy it. In plain terms: pay for data when it's likely to matter and the account is worth enough for it to matter.
Contact data vs. credit data
Separate the two needs:
- Skip trace fixes reachability: new phones, addresses, emails. Valuable when an account shows promise but has many attempts with no conversation.
- Credit data informs willingness and capacity to pay. Valuable when the model is unsure.
Measure it
Keep a log of approved and skipped purchases. Every quarter, compare outcomes for a sample of each. If skipped accounts perform as well as purchased ones, you're overbuying.
How DebtorIndex decides
DebtorIndex gives admins a Bureau pull list: accounts where the score is uncertain enough that a pull could change the decision, sorted most-uncertain first, each marked Pull or Skip. It separately flags Fix contact data accounts, with many attempts, no conversation and a bad number, for skip trace before more calls. See DebtorIndex in practice.
The bottom line
Every dollar of data should change a decision. DebtorIndex makes sure it does. See also data enrichment only pays when it changes the next action.
