Compare Portfolio Performance by Vintage, Not Just Totals

Compare month three with month three, not with a mixed total. Vintage reporting tells you if you're actually getting better.

Compare like with like, or you're measuring the calendar.

Summary

Mixed-age totals hide whether newer placements are improving.

Vintage reporting tracks each placement month's recovery at fixed ages.

Nexum stores placement and payment data per account and client for cohort analysis and client statements.

Key takeaways

Track recovery by placement month at 30, 60, 90 and 180 days.

Compare strategies and clients only at the same age.

Bring vintage curves to every client review.

Totals lie

"12% recovered this year" mixes January placements (a full year to pay) with November placements (barely contacted). Growth late in the year makes you look worse; a slowdown makes you look better.

What vintage reporting is

Vintage (or cohort) reporting groups accounts by when they were placed (usually by month) and tracks each group's cumulative recovery over time:

  • Recovery at 30 days after placement.
  • At 60, 90, 180 and 365 days.

Plot each vintage as a curve. Now you can see whether March placements are recovering faster than February's at the same age.

What it lets you do

Compare fairly. Evaluate a new strategy by comparing vintages worked with it against earlier vintages at the same age.

Compare clients. See which clients' placements perform better at 90 days, regardless of how much they placed or when.

Spot problems early. If the latest vintage is behind its predecessors at 30 days, investigate now.

Forecast. Use historical curves to estimate future collections from current placements.

Price. Use curves when bidding on new placements. See real unit economics.

How to build it

  1. Tag every account with its placement date and client.
  2. Record payments with dates.
  3. For each placement month, calculate cumulative net collections รท placed balance at fixed ages.
  4. Show the table and the curves.
  5. Segment by client and debt type.

Watch for

  • Recalls and returns that change placed balances.
  • Reversals that reduce net collections.
  • Different debt types within a client; segment when they behave differently.

Use it in client reviews

Vintage curves make quarterly reviews far more productive: they show the trend, the effect of changes and a credible forecast. See turn client reviews into recovery strategy sessions.

How Nexum supports it

Nexum stores placement and payment data per account and client. Back Office's Portfolio Overview shows recovery, totals and age buckets by client; HeartBeat's CFO and CEO views and Financial Pack give leadership the money picture; and client statements show each creditor its own results. Lists like Payments export for deeper cohort work.

The bottom line

Totals are headlines. Vintage curves win client reviews. See turn client reviews into strategy sessions.
