Failed Payments Need a Recovery Plan of Their Own
A failed payment is a conversation waiting to happen. Nexum routes it to the right fix fast.
A failed payment is a conversation waiting to happen, not a dead end.
Summary
Declines, returned ACH and missed installments are normal and often curable.
Each failure needs verification, account updates, a reason-based path and a measured cure rate.
Nexum's follow-ups, tasks, ConsentPay and screened outreach handle the recovery path.
Key takeaways
Record the failure reason on the account.
Trigger follow-up within a defined time.

Failures are normal
Plans break, cards expire, ACH comes back NSF. Many failures can be cured if the agency responds fast. Most don't, because nobody notices for days.
A recovery workflow
1. Verify the status. Confirm the failure from the processor and record it on the account with the reason (insufficient funds, card declined, account closed, authorization revoked, chargeback).
2. Update the account. Reverse the posting if needed, update the plan, restore the balance and adjust commissions.
3. Decide the path by reason.
- Temporary (insufficient funds): contact to reschedule; consider a retry only where permitted and authorized.
- Payment method problem (expired, closed): contact to update the method with a new authorization.
- Revoked authorization: stop debits; contact only as appropriate.
- Chargeback or dispute: treat as a potential dispute; investigate.
4. Contact appropriately. Through eligible channels, respecting frequency limits and any new restrictions, with a clear, non-threatening message and an easy way to fix it.
5. Track the cure. Did the consumer resume payments? How quickly?
Prevent repeats
- Confirm realistic amounts and dates when setting plans.
- Send reminders before due dates.
- Use authorizations that make updating the method easy.
Measure it
- Failure rate by payment method and plan type.
- Time from failure to first contact.
- Cure rate by failure reason.
- Collections recovered from cured plans.
How Nexum handles it
- Follow-up dates drive My Desk and the Dashboard, so failures get worked.
- + Task routes broken plans to supervisors; BackOfficeHub can prepare the decision.
- ConsentPay sends a fresh authorization link the consumer signs on their phone.
- Nudge and Campaigns reach eligible consumers with approved messages, screened for restrictions.
- DebtorIndex learns from broken plans and promises.
